Solar equipment guide

The estimator sizes a hybrid system that works with or without the grid. Here is what each part does and how we size it.

Solar panels (400 W)

The estimator lays out 400-watt panels, about 6 × 3.4 ft each. Panel count × 400 W gives your system size in kW. A typical panel makes 450–650 kWh a year depending on sun and roof direction; the estimator calculates it for each spot on your roof.

EG4 FlexBOSS21 hybrid inverter

EG4 FlexBOSS21 hybrid inverter

Converts panel power to household power and charges batteries. Each unit takes up to 21 kW of panels across 3 MPPT inputs and delivers up to 16 kW of AC power with solar. We add one inverter per 21 kW of panels.

EG4 GridBOSS microgrid interconnect

EG4 GridBOSS microgrid interconnect

Sits between the grid, your main panel and the inverters. It passes up to 200 A of grid power straight through to your home, for backed-up and non-backed-up circuits alike, so you keep a full 200 A service. In an outage it switches the whole home to backup, and it manages smart loads like an EV charger or AC. One GridBOSS handles a typical home system.

14.3 kWh of lithium iron phosphate storage per unit. The estimator sizes batteries for about 12 hours of your average use, enough to ride through an evening outage or shift solar into the night.

How the estimator sizes your system

  • Inverters: one FlexBOSS21 per 21 kW of panels, rounded up.
  • GridBOSS: one per system in most homes. Very large systems need a custom design.
  • Batteries: enough for about 12 hours of your average use, in 14.3 kWh units.
  • Production: from Google’s per-panel sun data, minus 15% for wiring and conversion losses.
